Position Purpose

The Sr. Manager, Data Science SPACE OPT is responsible for leading a data science team, developing advanced analytics and data science capabilities, and building relationship with internal customers and cross-functional teams to deliver data science tools, solutions, analysis, recommendations and insights that drive sales and profitability, improve customer experience and store labor efficiency.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

  • Key Responsibilities: Project Leadership and Problem Solving

  • % of Time: 30%

  • Task: Leads strategic projects and data science projects to develop robust analysis and solve business problems. Ability to translate complex business requirements to mathematical modeling, actionable insights, and recommendations. Designs and develops algorithms and models to use against large datasets to create business insights. Consults with business partners on the appropriate selection, utilization, and interpretation of advanced analytical methodologies. Effectively communicates findings and recommendations to senior leaders and teams to gain alignment on executing the recommendations. Collaborates with finance teams on measuring test and learn cases and incorporating test results into solution building.

  • Key Responsibilities: Strategy Development and Relationship building

  • % of Time: 30%

  • Task: Develops strategy and roadmap. Effectively builds and fosters trust, relationship, and collaboration with internal customers and cross-functional teams (Core Merchandising, Field Merchandising, Store Planning, Space Planning, Project Planning, Visual Merchandising, Assortment Planning, Finance, Store Ops, Construction/Real Estate, etc.) to drive the adoption of data science solutions and ensure that data-driven recommendations are aligned with strategic objectives.

  • % of Time: 20%

  • Task: Builds high-performing team. Develops team’s skills and capabilities on analytical thinking, technical skills, business acumen, and effective communications. Proactively identifies teams’ learning opportunities. Provides coaching and feedback on teams’ development opportunities. Manages resources effectively to align with strategic initiatives and business needs. Acquires and retains talent. Drive overall team’s results.

  • Key Responsibilities: Executive Communications

  • % of Time: 20%

  • Task:. Provides executive updates on project effectiveness, analysis synopsis, recommendations’ impact to internal customers, partners, and leaders at all levels across the organization as needed.

Number of Direct Reports: 5

Travel: Typically requires overnight travel 5% to 20% of the time.

Physical Requirements: Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Working Conditions: Located in a comfortable indoor area.

Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must pass the Drug Test.

  • Must pass Background Check.

  • Must pass pre-employment test if applicable.

  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Minimum Education Requirements: Master’s Degree

Minimum Work Experience: 4+ years of previous related work experience

Minimum Leadership Experience: 3+ years of previous leadership experience

Additional Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree in data science, analytics, industrial engineering, operations research, optimization, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or other equivalent quantitative fields.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

  • Working knowledge of Tableau

  • Working knowledge of presentation software (e.g. Microsoft PowerPoint)

  • Working knowledge of analytical/statistics software (e.g. SPSS, SAS, R, Stata)

  • Proficient with data mining software (e.g. IBM Cognos Business Intelligence, Hadoop)

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with cross-functional teams

  • Ability to develop and apply advanced mathematical/statistical techniques

  • Ability to draw accurate conclusions from financial documentation

  • Demonstrated project management skills

  • Ability to convey complex or technical ideas and processes in easy-to-understand terms to diverse audiences

  • Ability to negotiate, handle complaints, settle disputes, and resolve grievances with both internal and external customers

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of work experience in Analytics, Data Science, Retail, and Business Analysis.

  • High proficiency in statistical modeling applications and optimization highly preferred.

  • Experience with data mining, machine learning, statistical and optimization modeling tools/languages such as SQL, Google Big Query, R, Python, Matlab, Xpress, Gurobi, CPLEX.

  • Strong leadership skills and proven ability to make decisions, manage teams and projects, build relationships, and deliver results.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret space productivity data and understand the variety of factors that drive improvements to return on space.

  • Proficiency in financial/statistical modeling applications such as forecasting, pricing, clustering, or other regression/optimization technologies.

  • Proven ability to manage situations that require analytical thinking, negotiation, interpretation and execution.

  • In-depth knowledge of retail, supply chain, merchandise layout and space planning practices and procedures with the ability to analyze and interpret space decisions and space productivity

Preferred Education Requirements: Doctorate Degree

Preferred Work Experience: 6+ years of previous related work experience

Preferred Leadership Experience: 5+ years of previous leadership experience
