POSITION PURPOSE

Are you a creative problem solver and doer that can plan, develop, roll out, and maintain the standard operating procedures for a large, multi-disciplinary and geographically dispersed UX team? The Home Depot Online User Experience (OUX) team is looking to amplify our efforts and impact with the addition of a Manager, Design Operations. Reporting to the Director of OUX, the ideal candidate will have the primary goal of protecting the time and headspace of the OUX organization, which will allow the team to focus on their respective crafts. In other words, the Manager, Design Operations will be responsible the overall management, supervision, orchestration and optimization of people, processes and craft and help shape and evangelize the purpose to the broader organization.

The ideal candidate will improve team communication, culture, collaboration, process, tools, and remove roadblocks. We are looking for someone with deep experience in onboarding new UX hires, managing operational budget, headcount, org design, recruiting, and continuing education. The candidate will have had input and influence over what tools are appropriate for given teams and organizations, and know how to research, evangelize and train on them.

  • Orchestration

  • Drive OUX operational strategy, introduce and refine the role of DesignOps across the Interconnected Retail and cross-functional teams

  • Define and support strategic initiatives that improve operations team efficiency and impact

  • Develop and manage design programs including resourcing, timelines, and identifying new design programs

  • Maintain and improve relationships with service providers, own the relationships with partners like InVision, Sketch, Adobe and UserTesting. Manage contract renewals, introduce new tools and setup training for designers.

  • Provide support in the planning, budget and logistics of Design Sprints and workshops

  • Support Director with team travel and budget management with finance partners

  • Optimization

  • Implement or drive required changes to make sure the multi-disciplinary team is working at optimum efficiency

  • Lead or collaborate with OUX leadership in key project decision-making, including intake, scheduling, resource allocation, and coordination of teams and approval processes

  • Support the management team with effective team communication, proactive problem solving, information distribution

  • Manage the connection of brand standards and OUX’s centrally located Design System to facilitate shared understanding of libraries, components, patterns and any updates or changes

  • People

  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and coaching to all level of UX-ers, amplify their incredible work – Design Language, Research, Accessibility and Content Strategy

  • Provide repositories, process and opportunities for continuing education, information wayfinding and development

  • Provide comprehensive onboarding of new hires into the OUX ecosystem, establish visibility and opportunities with our internal Home Depot learning partners

  • Act as a bridge between interdependent groups and ensure that priorities and initiatives are understood and planned for effectively, improve cross-functional collaboration

  • Participate, plan and support team building events in addition to having a pulse on team health, engagement and voice

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

40% - Delivery & Execution:

  • Provides end-end leadership on design of products while keeping in mind dependencies and integration with other products across the customer journey

  • Enforces established standards and online best practices in partnership with peers and cross-functional leaders. Optimizes the usability and revenue potential of homedepot.com by identifying opportunities and developing solutions.

  • Review designs and work of UX team members to ensure that designs are aligned with company, stakeholder, and end user priorities and needs

  • Partners in the analysis of user experience data and provides recommendations to address business needs

  • Coaches and pairs with product team members (UX, Engineering, Data Science, and Product Management) across product teams to design solutions and share best practices

  • Guides the creation of designs such that information is easy to find, consume and understand

30% - Strategy & Planning:

  • Gains a thorough understanding of customer and associate needs, both existing and potential, and uses that knowledge to help design products that provide Home Depot customers an unparalleled shopping experience

  • Aligns user experience efforts across products and projects

  • Communicates and partners with key user and operational groups to understand business needs

  • Elicits ideas and assists team members with gaining shared understanding, and aligns the product team and stakeholders

  • Presents complex design concepts, user needs, and design rationale to multidisciplinary teams, as well as to key stakeholders and business partners

30% - People:

  • Provides leadership, mentoring, and coaching to UX-ers and attracts, retains, and develops top talent

  • Conducts annual and mid-year reviews, reviewing individual development plans and providing in the moment and direct performance feedback

  • Fosters collaboration with team members (Engineering, Product Management, Data Science etc.) to drive value and identify and resolve impediments

  • Acts as a proponent and evangelist of UX practices

  • Advocates for the end user and stakeholder by becoming associated with the product, empathizing with and understanding user needs

  • Guides more junior team members in strategy, alignment, analysis, and execution tasks

  • Participates in and contributes to learning activities around modern software design and development core practices

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.

  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Additional Minimum Qualifications:

Education Required:

The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

Years of Relevant Work Experience: 5 years

Physical Requirements:

Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

  • Strong interpersonal savvy, ability to manage nimbly across a large cross-functional team (50+)

  • Experience working in design operations, design agencies or design program management

  • Experience with agile development and methodologies

  • Thorough understanding of the UX process and disciplines

  • A driving passion for creating products create emotional connections with users

  • Flexibility and savvy in managing ambiguity

  • Previous experience in a retail/e-commerce environment

  • Ability to concept, present and execute. Act as an exemplary representative of the online experience team in its dealings with internal clients and external vendors with the ability to interact comfortably with executives at highest levels of the company.

  • Provide creative solutions consistent with industry trends, demonstrating ability to problem-solve, organize and project manage.

  • Ability to translate complex information into easy-to-understand designs and visual elements.

  • Proven ability working in fast paced environment with shifting priorities while managing tactical deliverables and meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to maintain strong rapport with teammates, and stakeholders from multiple business groups.
