Home Depot Director, Tax - Indirect Tax in Atlanta, Georgia

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director, Indirect Tax is an exciting and challenging role in a fast-paced Tax Department reporting directly to the Vice President (“VP”), Global Tax. The Director will have responsibilities for all operational aspects of the indirect tax function including sales and use tax, value added tax, real and personal property tax, business licenses and indirect tax process and technology. The position is responsible for leading a team of professionals in ensuring accurate and timely reporting and compliance, optimization of tax expense, advocacy on tax policy and legislation, driving innovation in process and analytics, interfacing with corporate and business leadership as well as with external tax auditors and consultants, professional organizations and government representatives.

The Home Depot Tax Department is embarking on a multi-year transformational journey to focus on value creation through technical competence, business acumen, strong relationships and process efficiency through automation enabled by technology. The Director, Indirect Tax will play a key role in driving the success of this transformation for the indirect tax function.

The Director role will be expected to:

  • Drive transformation of the operations through process innovation, technology enablement and optimization of resources

  • Engage in performance management, training and development, which ensure the career growth and engagement of the tax professionals.

  • Inspire teamwork across staff functions and other business groups to maximize the performance and the development of people.

  • Participate with the VP Global Tax and other leaders to implement high value tax strategies.

  • Foster an environment in the tax department to drive technical expertise, strong collaboration and communication, best practices and efficient processes.

  • Maintain and enhance strong partnerships across the Finance team and the business.

  • Timely communicate strategy and performance to internal constituents effectively and engage them in the vision of the tax function and its relationship to the business.

ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

Environment:

Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.

Travel:

Typically requires overnight travel 5% to 20% of the time.

Physical Requirements:

Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess a high degree of business judgment to bring a businessperson’s perspective to routine and complex tax issues. S/he will be able to quickly grasp company operations and business driver and will possess a high degree of integrity and independence. Importantly, the candidate must feel comfortable working in, as well as embracing, an environment that is changing and challenging, with the capability to participate in and accelerate the pace of change in the tax department.

The candidate must be a self-motivated team player who can credibly communicate with and relate to people at all levels in the organization, with the experience and ability to manage and mentor a developing tax team. S/he must have experience interfacing with and making presentations to both internal and external high-level executives.

S/he must have significant tax background with direct experience in all aspects of tax management; sales and use taxes, real and personal property tax and process and technology.

The individual will be able to demonstrate proven success as a strong leader and strategist at an organizational level which contributes to and advises top management on issues relating to indirect tax. S/he should possess excellent management and leadership skills with the ability to provide clear direction to the department while also functioning as an individual contributor.

Education Required:

The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a master's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job .

Years of Relevant Work Experience: 15 years of overall experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS in Accounting, Finance or related discipline required; CPA and advanced degree preferred.

  • At least 8 years of experience working for or with a large, U.S.-based, organization or professional services firm, with increasing levels of responsibility, with 15 years of overall experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive vision and purpose for a team of highly motivated and collaborative tax professionals and develop talent.

  • Must be able to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Excellent written and presentation skills coupled with strong interpersonal and team-building capabilities across different functional areas and cultures.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with Business Leaders and Senior Management.

  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, drive and successfully implement innovation through technology enablement and process effectiveness.

  • Successful experience working in a values-based culture.
